Speaking Multiple Languages Might Help You Age More Slowly, New Research Suggests

For years, many people have embraced multilingualism for cultural, social, or professional reasons. But now, science is pointing to an unexpected bonus: speaking more than one language may actually help slow down the ageing process.

A recent examination involving over 80,000 adults aged 51 to 90 from 27 European countries has revealed a striking pattern. Researchers compared individuals’ health and lifestyle factors with how quickly their bodies appeared to age biologically. The results raised an intriguing possibility — that the languages we use daily could have a deeper impact on long-term health than previously understood.

One of the key takeaways from the analysis is that individuals who spoke just one language tended to show signs of accelerated ageing more frequently. Accelerated ageing occurs when a person’s biological age exceeds their actual age, which may increase susceptibility to certain age-related conditions. On the other hand, people who regularly used more than one language were found to be substantially less likely to experience this faster ageing trajectory.

What makes the findings even more compelling is that the benefits seemed to grow with each additional language. This dose-dependent trend suggests that the protective influence of multilingualism may build over time as more languages are added into daily life. The research team highlighted that these effects appeared consistent regardless of regional, cultural, or social differences across Europe.

While earlier studies have explored bilingualism and cognitive health, they were often limited in scale or focused primarily on memory and mental decline. By analysing a larger and more diverse population, this recent work provides broader insight into the potential links between multilingual activity and overall ageing patterns.

The researchers point out that using several languages engages the mind in ways that keep important neural pathways active. Constantly managing attention, filtering out irrelevant information, and switching between language structures challenges the brain in a productive way. This mental flexibility may help maintain networks that typically weaken with age. Beyond cognitive benefits, the study also suggests that language use plays a role in emotional well-being, social connection, and even aspects of physical health.

Across the European Union, roughly three-quarters of working-age adults can speak more than one language, with Northern Europe generally showing higher proficiency. However, some regions have seen declining interest in foreign language study, raising questions about how educational habits today may influence wellbeing later in life.

As conversations around healthy ageing expand, researchers hope the findings will inspire more people — young and old — to explore language learning. Beyond strengthening cultural ties and improving communication skills, studying languages may also support resilience and reduce risk factors linked to ageing.

Toward the end of the report, one of the researchers noted that language learning could become a meaningful and cost-effective approach for improving long-term health outcomes. The idea that everyday activities such as speaking multiple languages can influence biological ageing may encourage communities, schools, and public health systems to consider multilingual education not only as a cultural asset, but also as a potential contributor to healthier, more connected ageing.
