Nissan Elgrand Returns in Style: A New Chapter for a Premium Japanese MPV

Large MPVs are enjoying strong demand today, and Nissan is clearly ready to rejoin the competition. After several years away from the spotlight, the brand is bringing back the Elgrand, its flagship luxury MPV, with a striking design and an interior that aims to set new standards of comfort. The refreshed model made its first appearance in late October at the 2026 Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, giving the world a clear glimpse of Nissan’s renewed direction for premium family travel.

In recent years, Nissan’s designers have been leaning heavily into Japanese heritage and craftsmanship for inspiration, and the latest Elgrand showcases this philosophy in a modern way. With bold bodywork sculpted to express what Nissan calls “Timeless Japanese Futurism”, the new model blends traditional elements with a sleek futuristic profile. The front fascia is particularly eye-catching, featuring signature lighting combined with patterns inspired by Japanese kumiko craftwork for a visually commanding presence.

The vehicle’s colour palette also speaks to its cultural connection. One of the launch finishes, Fuji Dawn, blends a rich red-purple tone known as Shigoku with hues that resemble the hues of sunrise over Mount Fuji. The result is a finish that adds further depth and personality to the already dramatic exterior.

Step inside and the Elgrand continues its focus on luxury, comfort, and a lounge-like ambience. The cabin is designed to feel more like a sophisticated private suite than a traditional MPV interior. Second-row passengers are treated to zero gravity captain’s seats meant to support the body for long journeys, while woodgrain accents, Kumiko-influenced design details, and TailorFit leather upholstery add refinement throughout. A 64-colour ambient lighting system brings a customisable atmosphere, letting passengers set the mood according to their preferences.

Just as many new Nissan models aim to balance modern technology with user-friendly controls, the Elgrand features twin 14.3-inch screens on the dashboard alongside physical buttons and switches for core functions. A premium 22-speaker Bose system will also be available, giving the cabin a high-quality audiovisual setup designed for entertainment and relaxation on the move.

Where many recent large MPVs have moved toward full electrification, Nissan is choosing a different approach. The new Elgrand will feature the company’s proven e-POWER system, where the wheels are driven exclusively by electric motors for smooth acceleration, while a petrol engine works primarily as a generator to supply power to the battery. The system is also paired with the latest version of Nissan’s e-4ORCE all-wheel drive, which uses torque from the rear motor to improve stability, reduce pitching and diving during acceleration and braking, and increase engagement when cornering.

To support this renewed focus on driving sophistication, the Elgrand will be equipped with Nissan’s Intelligent Dynamic Suspension system, designed to help minimise body roll and improve passenger comfort. Advanced driver assistance technology also comes standard. The vehicle will receive the latest version of Nissan’s ProPILOT1 system, enabling hands-off operation in low-speed traffic below 50km/h. For those who want more advanced features, ProPILOT 2.0 will be offered as an option, allowing hands-free highway driving and assisted lane changes.

Now entering a fresh era, the Elgrand carries an important legacy. First launched in 1997, the model played a key role in creating Japan’s modern premium MPV segment and has been one of the country’s most recognisable large people-movers. Nissan is keen to highlight this heritage as the new model prepares for production and returns to the market.

The latest version of the Elgrand is scheduled to launch in Japan between the second and third quarters of 2026. It is also understood that authorised distributor Tan Chong Motor is working to introduce the model to Singapore within the same year, positioning the Elgrand once again as a luxury MPV option for buyers seeking comfort, presence, and a distinct take on Japanese premium motoring.
