Range Rover Velar 3.0 S Review: Bigger Engine, Smoother Drive, and a Bold Step Forward

The Range Rover family has long offered a range of premium SUVs catering to various lifestyles and preferences. From the luxurious flagship Range Rover to the entry-level Evoque, each model plays a distinct role. Nestled between them is the often-overlooked Range Rover Velar — a sleek, mid-sized SUV that now comes with a heartier punch under the bonnet. With a new 3.0-litre engine and a host of standard features, the updated Velar aims to make a stronger impression. But is it enough to stand out in the crowded luxury SUV space?

What exactly is the Range Rover Velar?

In terms of size and pricing, the Velar comfortably fits between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. It occupies a rather unique position in the lineup, not quite having a direct rival in the market. To draw a comparison with BMW’s offerings, the Evoque competes with the X3, while the larger Range Rover models go head-to-head with the X5 and X6.

Logically, the Velar would seem to align with the BMW X4. However, its larger dimensions and refined design give it more presence. You could think of the Velar as an upscale, roomier version of the Evoque — a premium SUV that leans more towards elegant cruising than dynamic handling.

First launched in 2017, the Velar received a significant update in 2023, with a fresh look and updated interior. When it was introduced to Singapore in 2024, it came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine delivering 250hp and 365Nm of torque — aimed at keeping it within more accessible tax brackets.

Now in 2026, that engine has been replaced by a more powerful 3.0-litre inline-six engine, churning out 400hp and 550Nm of torque. While this might seem like a surprising move — given the general shift towards smaller engines — emissions regulations have played a role in the decision. In fact, the 2.0-litre engine no longer meets the latest environmental standards, prompting this bold upgrade.

What’s new in this refreshed Velar?

Beyond the more muscular engine, the 2026 Velar remains largely unchanged from the facelifted 2024 version. But there’s one important shift: the local distributor, Wearnes Automotive, has simplified the lineup. The Velar is now only offered in a single “S” trim level, which includes features that were previously exclusive to the top-tier Dynamic HSE variant.

These features include air suspension for added comfort, massive 22-inch alloy wheels, a premium Meridian sound system, and a 3D surround camera for better manoeuvrability. It’s now a more complete package — and less confusing for buyers who previously had to choose between multiple trims.

The exterior continues to showcase the cleaner design introduced last year, with a new grille and updated LED headlights. Inside, the dashboard has embraced modern minimalism. Gone are the dual screens; in their place is a single 11.4-inch touchscreen interface that blends into a streamlined dashboard. There are very few physical controls, and a redesigned gear selector replaces the older rotary knob. It may take some getting used to, but the cabin feels fresh, airy, and in line with current interior trends.

How does it perform on the road?

While we didn’t have the chance to drive the earlier 2.0-litre variant, the 3.0-litre engine certainly brings the Velar to life. With 400hp on tap, acceleration is swift and smooth, and the power delivery feels both confident and refined. The inline-six layout ensures a silky ride, and though the exhaust note is fairly subdued, there’s a satisfying growl when you push it.

The air suspension plays a big role in the driving experience. It absorbs road imperfections with ease, giving the Velar a comfortable, composed feel even over rough patches. It’s not a sporty SUV in the traditional sense, but it holds its own through corners with admirable stability, considering its size and height.

Is the 2026 Range Rover Velar 3.0 S worth it?

There's no denying it — the Velar doesn’t come cheap. At $316,888 before COE, and likely crossing the $400,000 mark once the certificate is included, this is firmly in premium territory.

But with the upgraded engine, generous equipment, and refined driving experience, the Velar 3.0 S presents a more complete offering than ever before. It’s a bold response to regulatory pressures that, somewhat unexpectedly, results in a more powerful and satisfying vehicle.

If you’re in the market for a luxurious SUV that strikes a balance between size, style, and sophistication — and you’re willing to pay for it — the new Range Rover Velar 3.0 S could be exactly what you’re looking for.
