Comparing the different types of car insurance in Singapore: Choosing the Right Coverage for Your Vehicle

Buying a car in Singapore comes with an important responsibility: insurance. Before you can hit the road legally, every vehicle—new or used—must be covered by a valid car insurance policy. For first-time car owners, navigating the variety of motor insurance plans can feel overwhelming, especially with different companies and a wide range of coverage options.

Car insurance, also known as motor or vehicle insurance, is designed to protect you, your passengers, and your vehicle in the event of an accident, theft, or other unexpected incidents. While it might seem complicated, understanding the main types of coverage available can make your decision much easier.

Broadly speaking, there are three main types of car insurance in Singapore: Third-Party Only (TPO), Third-Party Fire and Theft (TPFT), and Comprehensive insurance. Each comes with its own set of benefits, limitations, and price points.

Third-Party Only insurance is the most basic option. It primarily covers damages to other vehicles or property and injuries to other parties involved in an accident. Your own car, however, will not be covered in the event of a mishap. This makes TPO the most affordable option, ideal for those with older vehicles or tight budgets.

Stepping up a level, Third-Party Fire and Theft insurance adds coverage for your own vehicle in the event it is stolen or damaged by fire. It’s particularly useful for drivers who occasionally travel to Malaysia, or for those wanting extra peace of mind beyond basic TPO coverage. While it costs more than TPO, the additional protection can be worthwhile, especially if your vehicle is left parked in less secure areas.

For the most complete protection, Comprehensive car insurance covers nearly all situations—damage to your vehicle in an accident, fire, theft, and sometimes natural disasters. Comprehensive plans often include medical benefits for the driver, and in some cases, passengers as well. Many insurers even allow you to choose whether repairs are carried out at an authorised dealer or a third-party workshop, giving you flexibility and convenience.

To put things in perspective, consider a 32-year-old driver with a five-year-old Toyota Corolla Altis Classic and no No-Claims Discount (NCD). A Third-Party Only policy could cost around $1,550 per year, while a TPFT plan would increase the premium to approximately $1,910 annually. A full Comprehensive policy, offering the widest coverage and most peace of mind, would typically be around $2,025 per year. The additional investment ensures that you, your passengers, and your car are better protected against unforeseen incidents.

Choosing the right insurance ultimately depends on your driving habits, vehicle value, and comfort with risk. Whether you opt for affordability or full coverage, taking the time to compare policies can save you money and stress in the long run. Tools like Sgcarmart’s car insurance comparison platform make this process simple, letting you receive multiple personalised quotes from various insurers in just a few days.

With the right coverage in place, you can enjoy the freedom of driving in Singapore with confidence, knowing that you and your vehicle are well protected.
