2026’s Standout Cars

Electric vehicles are no longer niche alternatives. For many buyers entering the new-car market today, they have become genuinely attractive, practical choices across nearly every price range and body style. From family-friendly people movers to sleek executive sedans, there is now an electric option to suit almost every kind of driver.

This shift is clearly reflected in our Editorial Team’s 2026 round-up. For the first time since we began compiling this annual list in 2017, fully electric models make up exactly half of our collective top ten. Five of the cars that impressed us most this year rely solely on battery power, highlighting how far the segment has progressed in terms of usability, refinement and overall appeal.

That said, electrification has not erased the charm of familiar favourites. Several returning names continue to define their segments, whether powered by hybrid systems or traditional engines that still deliver strong real-world performance. Together, these ten cars paint a revealing picture of where the Singapore market stands today — and where it may be heading next.

Leading the list is the Aion V, a midsize electric crossover that appeared on nearly every editor’s personal shortlist. Its broad appeal lies in balance. The driving experience is smooth and approachable, the ride quality is forgiving on urban roads, and the cabin feels thoughtfully designed rather than overly experimental. Family-friendly touches such as generous rear legroom, reclining second-row seats and a panoramic roof help it stand out in daily use. With a long driving range and fast charging capability, the Aion V delivers strong value without demanding an excessive price tag, making it one of the most well-rounded electric crossovers currently available.

At the opposite end of the size spectrum, the BMW 116 Hatchback proves that driving enjoyment is not limited to powerful or rear-wheel-drive machines. Despite its compact footprint and modest engine output, the latest generation feels lively and engaging on the road. Updated steering and suspension tuning give it a confidence that belies its size, while refreshed interior technology brings it in line with newer offerings. In city traffic or on winding roads, it remains a car that rewards time behind the wheel.

The BYD Sealion 7 represents another side of modern car buying: widespread acceptance. Already a familiar sight on local roads, it earns its place through quiet competence rather than headline-grabbing performance. The interior balances physical controls with digital displays, the ride prioritises comfort, and space is ample for passengers and luggage alike. While it may not aim to excite, it succeeds as a calm, well-equipped SUV that meets everyday needs with little fuss.

Design takes centre stage with the Cupra Tavascan. This electric SUV makes a strong visual statement, especially after dark, when its dramatic lighting and sculpted interior surfaces come to life. Beyond appearances, it delivers confident handling and responsive steering that reinforce its performance credentials. While it shares underlying components with other vehicles from the same group, the overall experience feels distinct, appealing to buyers who value character as much as capability.

Practicality shines through in the Honda Freed Hybrid. Long popular for its compact dimensions and clever seating, the latest version benefits from a quieter and more efficient hybrid system that improves both refinement and fuel use. Its straightforward dashboard layout, thoughtful ergonomics and ability to comfortably seat seven make it especially well suited to families navigating Singapore’s urban environment.

Newcomer IM Motors makes a strong impression with the IM 5 Sedan. In a market increasingly crowded with unfamiliar brands, this electric saloon stands out for its polished ride quality and premium feel. Features such as rear-wheel steering help mask its size, making it easier to manoeuvre than expected. Inside, generous sound insulation and quality materials create a calm, upscale atmosphere that belies its newcomer status.

Few names carry as much heritage as the Porsche 911, and the latest Carrera iteration shows how careful evolution can preserve character while enhancing capability. Subtle exterior updates sharpen its presence, while incremental performance gains add to its already impressive dynamics. Despite its sporting focus, it remains surprisingly usable for everyday driving, continuing to appeal to those who want excitement without sacrificing practicality.

The Subaru Forester Hybrid marks a significant step forward for the model. While its design remains deliberately conventional, the addition of a more powerful hybrid system improves both performance and efficiency. All-wheel drive capability, strong outward visibility and a spacious cabin ensure that it retains the qualities that have long defined the Forester name.

Volvo’s refreshed XC60 Plug-in Hybrid benefits from increased electric range and updated in-car technology, enhancing its day-to-day versatility. These updates complement, rather than replace, the brand’s established focus on comfort, understated luxury and reassurance on the road. The result is a premium SUV that feels more relevant than ever.

Rounding out the list is the XPENG X9, a large electric MPV that showcases how far the segment has evolved. Packed with advanced features and offering impressive interior flexibility, it combines strong build quality with genuine everyday usability. Its long driving range and thoughtful updates reinforce its position as one of the most convincing electric people movers currently on sale.

Taken together, these ten cars reflect a market in transition. Electrification is clearly gaining momentum, but diversity remains key. Whether powered by batteries, hybrid systems or conventional engines, the best cars of 2026 share a common thread: they are designed to fit seamlessly into real lives, not just to chase trends.
