JOHOR - Malaysia's renowned 21st Special Forces Group has joined forces with the Johor Military Force for a large-scale tactical training operation spanning multiple strategic locations across Johor from May 1 to 13.

Codenamed "Thunderstorm Exercise Series 1/2026," the intensive drills are being conducted in key areas including Pengerang, Tanjung Pengelih, Teluk Ramunia, and Desaru, as confirmed by official reports from Bernama on Wednesday (April 30).

The Malaysian Army (TDM) revealed in an official statement that this comprehensive exercise will showcase advanced military capabilities, featuring coordinated deployments of specialized units, tactical vehicle maneuvers, aerial operations with helicopter support teams, and controlled detonation demonstrations.

"We kindly request local communities and motorists to remain calm throughout the operation period and strictly adhere to all safety protocols implemented during these exercises," emphasized the military spokesperson.

Authorities have implemented temporary security measures including strategically placed roadblocks around Teluk Ramunia between May 1-9 to facilitate smooth exercise operations. Additional traffic control points will be activated near critical infrastructure including:

• Sungai Johor Bridge checkpoint on May 10

• Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal perimeter on May 10

• A brief overnight closure of Highway E22 from 1am-3am on May 11 for special operations

TDM officials clarified that these realistic training scenarios are designed to enhance counter-terrorism preparedness and safeguard national security interests against potential threats. The exercises form part of ongoing efforts to maintain operational readiness among Malaysia's elite defense units.

The military command has appealed for public cooperation in verifying information through official channels only, urging citizens to refrain from sharing unconfirmed details about the ongoing drills that might cause unnecessary concern.
