Dollar, Bonds, or Gold: Where Should Investors Seek Safety Amid Market Turmoil?

Recent unrest in the Middle East has renewed investor interest in safe-haven assets, sparking debate over which investments truly offer protection during periods of uncertainty. Traditional refuges such as gold, the US dollar, and government bonds are showing varied performance, making the choice more complex.

Gold has experienced significant volatility, while the US dollar — previously out of favour — has regained strength. The dollar index, tracking the currency against six others, rose 1.5% this week, even outperforming typically defensive currencies like the Swiss franc and Japanese yen. Analysts note that short-term dollar cash is most in demand, and factors like rising oil prices from Brent crude exceeding $80 per barrel can bolster the currency. Still, experts warn that US policy uncertainty can weaken the dollar’s role as a safe haven in some contexts.

Government bonds have not drawn the usual flight-to-safety demand. Investors are more focused on inflation outlooks than defensive qualities, and fiscal concerns, such as Germany’s easing of its debt brake, have limited the appeal of sovereign debt. Germany’s 10-year Bund yields rose 14 basis points this week, highlighting the market’s sensitivity to government borrowing.

Gold continues to demonstrate strong safe-haven credibility, with a 240% gain so far this decade. Despite occasional short-term drops — partly due to portfolio rebalancing amid broader market losses — analysts maintain that gold’s role as a hedge against inflation, geopolitical risk, and debt remains solid. Strategic allocations in gold ETFs are still below recommended levels, suggesting room for further investment. State Street forecasts that gold prices are more likely to approach $6,000 rather than fall to $4,000 this year, emphasizing its continued relevance for investors.

Traditional currency havens like the Swiss franc and Japanese yen have struggled this week, falling 1.2% and 0.8% respectively. The yen remains relatively attractive for valuation reasons, though political uncertainty and potential rate adjustments in Japan add risk. Similarly, the Swiss National Bank’s readiness to intervene could limit the franc’s upside.

Defensive stocks, often expected to hold up during market stress, have underperformed in this environment. Sectors such as utilities and consumer staples in the S&P 500 are down 1% and 2.8% respectively, while in Europe, utilities fell 3% and consumer staples 4.5%, compared to a 3% decline in the STOXX 600. Prior strong performance in these sectors, combined with the appeal of hard assets like infrastructure and industrials, has influenced their relative weakness.

Ultimately, the current market conditions highlight that no single safe haven offers guaranteed protection. Investors may need to consider a diversified approach, balancing short-term cash positions in the dollar, strategic holdings in gold, and cautious exposure to defensive equities, while remaining mindful of geopolitical and macroeconomic developments that could influence returns
