30-Year-Old Geylang Curry Rice Legend Bids Farewell – Last Day May 12

After three decades of dishing out Singapore’s iconic scissor-cut curry rice in Geylang, New Scissor-Cut Curry Rice Restaurant has announced its permanent closure on May 12, marking the end of an era for late-night comfort food lovers.

The stall broke the news in an emotional Facebook post on April 14, calling it a "difficult decision" prompted by "a number of challenges." A follow-up post on April 29 confirmed there would be no successor or takeover: "Hello everyone. Please note that our final day of operation will be 12th May 2026."

This humble yet beloved dish – where servers snip meats and toppings with scissors before drowning them in aromatic curry and braised gravy – holds special meaning for generations of Singaporeans. Known for generous portions and wallet-friendly prices (currently $4.80 for a set with meat, cabbage and egg), it’s been a go-to supper spot since the 1990s.

Longtime patrons flooded social media with nostalgia after foodie page Mai Mookata De Andrew shared news of the closure. Many recalled when the same meal cost just $3, tracing its gradual price hikes over the years to today’s $4.80 tag.

"From teenage eat until adult... gonna miss it," wrote one commenter, while another praised their ingredient-packed soup: "Late night one less choice liao [already]." One devoted customer lamented after twenty years of loyalty: "Tried many other stalls but this remained my favorite... Really no way to continue?"

The stall acknowledged both praise and criticism in their response online, hinting at broader struggles facing Geylang’s F&B scene: "Walk around and see how many outlets have closed from 2024 to 2026 here." While rising costs are suspected as the main reason behind their shutdown, AsiaOne awaits official confirmation from the owners.
