Public warned against consuming 4 products after reported adverse effects

Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has issued a public advisory cautioning against the use of four products found to contain potent medicinal ingredients that were either banned or not listed on the labels. This alert follows reports of serious adverse effects in consumers, including elevated blood pressure, severe tremors, and insomnia.

The products in question are Ubat Angin Tulang, Tianma Duzhong Shujing Wan, IM SO am, and IM TOX pm. The first two are marketed for pain relief and musculoskeletal support, while IM SO am and IM TOX pm are promoted as a paired regimen for slimming purposes.

The HSA urges anyone who has taken Ubat Angin Tulang or Tianma Duzhong Shujing Wan to seek medical attention immediately. Consumers of IM SO am and IM TOX pm should stop usage and consult a doctor if they feel unwell or have concerns about their health. All sellers and suppliers are required to cease distribution of these products immediately.

Laboratory testing by the HSA revealed that Ubat Angin Tulang, which advertised only herbal components such as ginseng and cordyceps, actually contained dexamethasone (a steroid), furosemide (a diuretic), and chlorpheniramine (an antihistamine). These potent substances can cause serious side effects if used without medical supervision. One woman in her 60s who took the product for three months experienced rapid weight gain and high blood pressure after obtaining it from a makeshift stall in Jurong.

Similarly, Tianma Duzhong Shujing Wan contained five potent unlisted ingredients, including steroids dexamethasone and prednisolone, anti-inflammatory diclofenac, and furosemide and chlorpheniramine. An elderly man in his 80s developed dizziness, low blood pressure, and adrenal insufficiency after taking the product for about a year. Both individuals had received the products via relatives who purchased them from Malaysia.

For the slimming products, IM SO am was found to contain sibutramine, a banned substance, while IM TOX pm contained undeclared laxatives (sennosides). A woman consuming these products experienced severe tremors, insomnia, and light-headedness, nearly fainting twice.

In response, the HSA has collaborated with online marketplaces such as Shopee, Lazada, and Carousell to remove the listings and is investigating the sellers.

The HSA advises the public to remain vigilant when purchasing health products. Consumers are encouraged to buy only from reputable sources, carefully review product claims, report suspicious items, and always follow professional medical guidance. Ensuring product safety helps prevent harmful effects and protects overall well-being.
