What Singapore Residents Should Know About Using Medisave for Dental Care

Medisave is Singapore’s national healthcare savings scheme, designed to help citizens and permanent residents set aside part of their income for future medical needs. While many associate Medisave with hospital stays and major procedures, fewer people realise that it can also be used for selected dental services under specific conditions.

Understanding what is covered — and what is not — can help patients plan their dental expenses more effectively and avoid unexpected out-of-pocket costs.

When Can Medisave Be Used for Dental Care?

Medisave may be used to offset costs for certain dental procedures performed in approved medical institutions in Singapore. These typically include inpatient care and approved day procedures.

For inpatient claims, the patient must be admitted for at least eight hours, unless the procedure qualifies as a recognised day surgery. Claims can be made using the patient’s own Medisave account or that of an immediate family member, such as a spouse, parent or child, subject to available balances and approval.

Dental facilities that are accredited by the relevant authorities are allowed to submit Medisave claims on behalf of patients, provided all requirements are met.

Dental Procedures Commonly Eligible for Medisave

Medisave is generally limited to dental procedures that involve surgery or are classified as day procedures. Common examples include:

Dental implants Surgical removal of wisdom teeth Surgical extraction of retained or fractured teeth Bone grafting Sinus lift procedures Gum-related surgical procedures

Routine dental care and non-surgical procedures are not covered under the scheme.

Using a Family Member’s Medisave

If a patient’s Medisave balance is insufficient, funds may be drawn from an immediate family member’s account. However, this requires consent from the account holder and completion of the relevant authorisation forms. Approval is subject to account limits and prevailing guidelines.

How Much Can Be Claimed?

The amount that can be claimed from Medisave depends on the type and complexity of the procedure performed. Each eligible procedure is assigned a code under Singapore’s Table of Surgical Procedures, which specifies the maximum claimable amount.

In general, Medisave claims for dental surgery range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, depending on procedural complexity. The final amount is determined after the procedure is assessed and classified accordingly.

How to Apply for Medisave for Dental Procedures

Patients who intend to use Medisave should inform the medical provider before payment or discharge. They will be required to complete and sign a Medisave authorisation form, which allows the institution to process the claim directly.

Once the claim is submitted, patients will receive a Medisave usage statement detailing the institution involved, the patient’s name, and the amount deducted from the Medisave account. Any remaining balance payable will also be communicated clearly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Medisave be used for simple tooth extractions? No. Medisave is limited to surgical or day procedures. Simple, non-surgical extractions are not eligible.

Can Medisave be used for braces, crowns or non-surgical root procedures? No. Non-surgical dental work, including orthodontics, crowns, bridges, dentures and standard root procedures, is not covered under Medisave rules.

How is the final claim amount decided? The claimable amount is determined after the procedure, based on its classification and complexity under the approved surgical table.

What This Means for Patients

Medisave can help ease the cost of selected dental surgical procedures, particularly those that would otherwise result in higher out-of-pocket expenses. However, coverage is limited and subject to strict guidelines.

Patients are encouraged to clarify eligibility, claim limits and remaining balances before proceeding, so they can make informed financial decisions while planning their dental care.
