Taking Melatonin Nightly: What Sleep Experts Say About Safety, Dosage and Long-Term Use

If you’ve tried a melatonin supplement before — or are considering one — you may have the same questions many others are asking: Can it be used nightly? How long is too long? And if it’s often described as “non-habit forming,” are there still downsides to be aware of?

Interest in melatonin has grown steadily in recent years. According to local pharmacy trends in Singapore, enquiries about melatonin now account for a noticeably larger share of supplement-related questions than in the past. This reflects a broader shift toward self-managed sleep support as more people report irregular sleep schedules, late-night screen use and frequent travel.

What Melatonin Actually Does

Melatonin is a hormone naturally released by the brain in response to darkness. It plays a key role in signalling when the body should prepare for rest. Exposure to light — particularly from phones, tablets and laptops — can reduce the body’s natural release, which is one reason late-night screen habits may delay sleep.

Natural melatonin levels rise in the evening, peak during the night and fall by morning. Research suggests that even very small supplemental amounts can raise blood melatonin levels far above what the body typically produces. Production also declines gradually with age, which partly explains why older adults often report lighter or more fragmented sleep.

How Much Is Enough — and When Is It Too Much?

Melatonin supplements are most commonly used to support the body clock, rather than to “force” sleep. Small amounts can help shift sleep timing earlier for people whose natural rhythm runs late.

Commercial products, however, are often sold in doses that exceed typical physiological levels. Many supplements on the market start at several milligrams per serving — far higher than the quantities naturally produced by the body.

Higher amounts do not necessarily mean better results. When taken in excess, melatonin may remain in the body longer than intended, increasing the likelihood of next-day grogginess, headaches or light-headedness. There is also limited long-term data on whether prolonged use at high levels could interfere with the body’s natural hormonal signalling.

For this reason, starting with the lowest effective amount and increasing only if necessary is widely regarded as a cautious approach.

Why Melatonin Doesn’t Work for Everyone

Melatonin is not a universal solution for all sleep difficulties. Its effects depend largely on the root cause of the problem.

It tends to be more helpful when sleep issues are related to body clock timing — such as delayed sleep schedules or jet lag. It is often less effective when sleep disruption stems from factors like breathing disturbances during sleep, emotional stress or ongoing mood challenges.

Timing also matters. Taking melatonin at the wrong point in the day may have little effect, or in some cases may shift the body clock in the opposite direction from what was intended.

Another factor is product consistency. As supplements are not regulated in the same way as prescription items, the actual melatonin content may differ from what is stated on the label, which can lead to unpredictable results.

How Long Can Melatonin Be Used?

Melatonin supplements are generally intended for short-term use, such as during travel across time zones or periods of temporary sleep disruption.

Many product labels suggest limiting use to several weeks or a few months. The effects of longer-term, continuous use are less well studied. For individuals considering extended use, professional guidance is recommended to help weigh potential benefits against uncertainties.

While melatonin does not appear to cause physical dependence in the way some sleep aids do, some people may develop a psychological reliance. Gradually reducing the amount over time — while reinforcing consistent sleep routines — can help restore confidence in sleeping without supplementation.

Are Melatonin Products Sold in Singapore Regulated?

In Singapore, most melatonin products are sold as supplements rather than registered medicines. This means they do not require pre-approval, though sellers must follow guidelines on permitted ingredients and labelling claims.

As a result, quality and dosage accuracy can vary between brands. Consumers are advised to purchase from reputable sources and to be cautious with products bought online, particularly those making strong or unrealistic claims.

Can Melatonin Be Combined With Other Natural Sleep Aids?

There is limited research on combining melatonin with other calming products such as herbal teas or aromatic oils. While these are generally considered low risk on their own, using them together may increase drowsiness or reduce alertness more than expected.

Those considering combining multiple sleep-related products may wish to seek individualised advice, especially if they need to remain alert the next day.

Best Practices for Use

Melatonin is typically taken in the evening, after food. Fast-release forms are often used shortly before bedtime, while extended-release versions are taken earlier to support overnight effects.

It is best taken with water and not combined with alcohol or caffeinated drinks, as these can interfere with its intended effects. Certain long-term medications may also interact with melatonin, so additional caution is advised for those managing ongoing health conditions.

Choosing Between Tablets, Liquids and Gummies

Different formats suit different preferences. Tablets and capsules tend to offer more consistent dosing, while liquids and sprays may act faster. Gummies are popular for convenience, though consistency of dosage can vary depending on manufacturing quality.

For people who have trouble staying asleep through the night, slower-release formats may be more suitable.

The Bottom Line

Melatonin can be a useful short-term aid for managing sleep timing and routine disruptions, but more is not always better. Understanding dosage, timing and duration — and choosing reliable products — can make a meaningful difference.

As with many wellness supplements, melatonin works best when paired with good sleep habits: consistent bedtimes, reduced evening screen exposure and a calming pre-sleep routine.
