The team evaluated more than a thousand chemical contaminants and observed how they interacted with various types of healthy gut bacteria. Many of these chemicals are ones people encounter unknowingly through food, water, and environmental exposure. While safety checks for such substances typically focus on their intended industrial or agricultural functions, the new study suggests it may be equally important to examine how they interact with beneficial microbes.
Although real-world effects remain uncertain, scientists emphasise that good gut health depends on maintaining stable bacterial diversity. Only later in the research did scientists discover the most striking finding: 168 chemicals were identified as harmful to gut bacteria, including pesticides, herbicides, insecticides used in agriculture, as well as industrial chemicals found in plastics and flame retardants. Some of these substances were not previously believed to affect living organisms at all. The laboratory tests also indicated that bacteria sometimes adapted in ways that may increase resistance to antibiotics — a growing concern globally due to antimicrobial resistance.
Researchers say more real-world data is needed to understand how much exposure people truly experience and how that might translate to gut imbalance. Still, they highlight simple steps that can help minimise unnecessary contact with potentially harmful chemicals. These include avoiding the use of pesticides at home, choosing products with clearer safety labels, and thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables before meals.
