Should You Retire Early in Singapore? What You Need to Know Before Taking the Leap

Feeling worn out from the daily grind? You’re not alone. That’s why the idea of Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) has caught on. The promise of walking away from your 9-to-5 job for good sounds incredibly tempting. But before you decide to pull the plug, there are two crucial questions you need to answer.

The first is financial: Do you really have enough money to retire today?

The second goes deeper: What will you do with your time and energy once you no longer have to work?

Let’s start with the numbers.

How much money do you actually need? There’s no single formula, but two common approaches can help you estimate your retirement target: the 4% Rule and the Dividend Income Strategy.

The 4% Rule – a popular starting point The 4% Rule was introduced by US financial planner William Bengen in 1994 and later popularised by the 1998 Trinity Study.

Here’s how it works: If you expect to spend S$36,000 per year in retirement, then you’ll need about S$900,000 in liquid assets. That’s because S$36,000 ÷ 0.04 = S$900,000.

According to the study, this amount allows you to withdraw 4% (adjusted for inflation) each year, with a very low chance of running out of money over 30 years.

While this rule is a useful guideline, it assumes a US-based portfolio with 50% equities and 50% bonds, and that your expenses stay constant. In reality, markets fluctuate, portfolios vary, and your lifestyle needs may change.

That means the 4% Rule is best used as a rough guide, not a one-size-fits-all solution.

The Dividend Income Strategy – living off passive income Some people dislike the idea of depleting their savings and prefer a more conservative approach: living only on passive income from dividends and interest, without touching the principal.

This approach offers peace of mind but requires a bigger starting amount. For example, if you want S$36,000 a year and can find stocks yielding 5%, you’d need S$720,000. However, this doesn’t factor in inflation, and dividends are not guaranteed—they can be cut during downturns.

To be safe, you might want to target a dividend income at least 1.5 times your expected expenses. This ensures a buffer for inflation and market volatility, though it also means you’ll need a larger retirement pot.

Balancing the numbers Both methods give you a starting point, but neither captures the full picture. Retirement spending patterns are not fixed—you may spend more in the early years and less later.

A detailed retirement plan, with projections year by year, will provide more clarity. Don’t forget to include payouts from CPF Life, which can reduce the amount you need from your own savings.

At the end of the day, there’s no magic number. A mix of strategies, along with flexibility, will go a long way in ensuring financial security.

The bigger question: How will you spend your time? Money aside, what really matters is how you’ll spend your days once you stop working.

It’s easy to imagine yourself travelling or catching up on shows, but leisure can lose its shine if that’s all you do. Many retirees struggle with the sudden loss of structure, identity, and social connections that work once provided.

The key is to think ahead. Explore hobbies, volunteering, part-time work, or even new learning opportunities. Retirement doesn’t mean stopping—it means redirecting your energy to activities that bring you joy and purpose.

Financial Independence isn’t the same as retirement Achieving financial independence doesn’t mean you must quit work entirely. It simply means you have the freedom to choose. You could leave your job, take on something new, or even continue working if you enjoy it—without the pressure of financial necessity.

That’s the real appeal of FIRE: not just escaping the grind, but gaining the freedom to design a life that works for you.

Retiring early can be rewarding, but it’s about more than hitting a financial target. The real success lies in balancing money, lifestyle, and purpose—so you can step into the next chapter of your life with confidence.
