In a major victory for passenger comfort, Korean Air has claimed the prestigious title of Airline of the Year for 2026 by leading aviation safety and product rating authority AirlineRatings.com - and their generous legroom appears to be the winning factor.
The South Korean national carrier's commitment to spacious economy seating helped it soar past competitors, including last year's champion Qatar Airways which settled for second place. Japan Airlines shares honors with Korean Air for offering what experts call "the most roomy economy-class configuration worldwide."
Air New Zealand secured third position in the closely watched rankings, followed by Cathay Pacific in fourth. Singapore Airlines made an impressive leap into the top five after ranking twelfth last year, demonstrating significant improvements in passenger experience.
The Winning Formula: Comfort Meets Innovation
The selection process combines rigorous analysis of traveler satisfaction surveys with expert evaluations across multiple criteria including cabin comfort, service consistency, operational innovation, plus critical safety and financial health metrics.
"This year we placed special focus on economy class conditions since that's where most passengers spend their flight time," explained Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings.com. "Korean Air stood out by resisting industry trends that sacrifice comfort - maintaining superior seat pitch when others have squeezed in extra rows."
While many carriers reduced seat pitch to 31 inches on Boeing 777s (down from previous standards), KoreanAir preserved its roomy 33-to34-inch configuration - a decision clearly appreciated by travelers judging from glowing customer feedback.
