Fluoride in Singapore: Should You Be Concerned About Its Effects?

A recent US study published in January has reignited debates about fluoride usage, particularly in water, after suggesting a possible link between higher fluoride exposure and lower IQ scores in children. The findings, featured in the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics, have drawn criticism from some scientists who question the study's methodology while reaffirming fluoride's well-documented dental benefits.

The discussion has even reached Singapore’s shores, prompting Health Minister Ong Ye Kung to address public concerns on Facebook on Jan 30. But what exactly is fluoride, and how does it affect Singaporeans daily?

Dr. Liau Chen Hong, a dental surgeon at Raffles Dental, explains that fluoride is "a mineral naturally found in small amounts in food and available as dietary supplements." In dentistry, he adds, "fluoride plays a crucial role in preventing and reversing tooth decay by strengthening enamel." Beyond oral health, it also contributes to bone strength.

In Singapore—and many other countries—fluoride is added to drinking water through a process called water fluoridation. According to PUB (Singapore’s national water agency), this practice dates back to 1957 as part of public health efforts to improve dental hygiene nationwide.

Why Are People Worried About Fluoride?

The controversy stems partly from misconceptions surrounding its safety. Some believe excessive fluoride could lead to cancer or cognitive impairments—claims that experts say lack sufficient evidence.

"While high concentrations may show genotoxic effects," says Dr. Eunice Foo from Q&M Dental Surgery,"no direct link between regulated fluoride intake and increased cancer risk has been proven." Similarly regarding IQ concerns raised by recent studies: researchers emphasize context matters—the correlation was only observed where concentrations exceeded 1.5mg per liter—far above recommended levels set by global authorities like WHO (World Health Organization).

Singapore maintains strict controls over its tap-water quality with current levels capped at just under half (<0 .7mg/L)of WHO’s maximum threshold ensuring safety without compromising benefits .

##Should You Be Concerned? Experts agree there’s little cause for alarm if proper guidelines are followed. “Fluoridated products such as tooth paste remain safe when used correctly,” assures Dr.Liau . Dr.Foo adds :“With agencies like MOH(Ministry Of Health )and HSA(Health Sciences Authority )overseeing regulations ,it would be difficult for average person consume harmful amounts.” However parents should supervise young children brushing teeth prevent accidental swallowing large quantities which could result mild discoloration known fluorosis —a purely cosmetic issue rather than medical concern . Ultimately, say professionals, the key lies moderation adherence established protocols enjoy advantages while minimizing risks associated any substance including this widely-used mineral .
