Breaking the Silence: Singapore Women's Struggle with Undiagnosed Sexual Health Issues

SINGAPORE – When 30-year-old Aisyah (name changed for privacy) found herself unable to consummate her marriage in 2022, she and her husband immediately recognized this wasn't just newlywed jitters.

Their online research led them to discover vaginismus - an often misunderstood condition where the vaginal muscles contract involuntarily, making penetration impossible. Like many women facing similar challenges, Aisyah's journey to diagnosis and treatment would prove far more complicated than expected.

The healthcare professional first sought help at a public hospital, trying dilator therapy - a treatment using medical tools to gradually stretch vaginal tissue. She also worked on overcoming deep-seated fears about intimacy stemming from cultural taboos surrounding sex education during her upbringing.

"After just one successful attempt at penetration, we were discharged," recalls Aisyah. "But the problem persisted."

Over the next eighteen months, the couple exhausted multiple options - consulting pelvic floor physiotherapists and sexual health counselors without finding lasting solutions. "We felt lost," admits Aisyah. "Nobody seemed to have the right answers for our specific situation."

The Hidden Epidemic

A groundbreaking 2024 study by KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) reveals that Aisyah's experience is far from unique. Surveying 787 Singaporean women aged 21-45, researchers found:

  • 54% reported poor sexual function across multiple domains including desire, arousal and satisfaction

  • 57% couldn't recognize symptoms of female sexual health issues

The KKH research team emphasizes that these challenges stem from complex interactions between physical health (like chronic conditions), psychological factors (including stress or anxiety), and sociocultural influences that shape attitudes toward women's sexuality in multiethnic Singapore.
